Early in the spring Marsh Marigold emerges from the soil. The heart shaped leaves are shiny and bright green. The plant forms a clump that becomes larger year after year. They can easily be divided in the spring to make more plants. Marsh Marigold spreads easily from seed also.
The flowers are bright yellow and flower just as the trees are budding out. The flowers are similar in shape to a buttercup but are larger, about 1 1/2 inches across. A wet meadow full of them in the spring is quite a sight.
After flowering and setting seed the plants go dormant, usually the end of June into July. They make an excellent companions for Sensitive Fern, Red Cardinal Flower, Jack in the Pulpit, Green Coneflower,Turks Cap Lily and Royal Fern. They fill in and grow or flower after Marsh Marigold has done its thing. Marsh marigold is a wonderful way to start your spring bog garden.
